Since the recent hike in gas and utility prices starting April 1, many Strathmore residents may be counting on the Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR) to help offset their expenses. However, not everyone may receive their rebate Today (April 15) as anticipated.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has outlined that individuals who filed their taxes electronically on or before March 15 should expect their next CCR payment on April 15.

"If your tax returns are processed after this date, your payment will be included in a subsequent payment after your return is assessed. If you file after March 15, generally, you can expect your CCR payment six to eight weeks after your tax return has been assessed," The CRA's website stated.

For eligible Albertans who filed on time, rebates range from $225 for a single individual to $112.50 for a spouse or common-law partner, with additional amounts for children and rural residents. The rural supplement, pending Royal Assent, constitutes 20% of the base amount, which also includes.

  • $56.25 per child under 19
  • $112.50 for the first child in a single-parent family

The rural supplement is:

  • $45 for an individual
  • $22.50 for a spouse or common-law partner
  • $11.25 per child under 19
  • $22.50 for the first child in a single-parent family

The CCR, redistributing fuel charge proceeds, aims to benefit lower-income households, with disbursements occurring quarterly via direct deposit or cheque.

Effective this month, a family of four can expect varying rebates across provinces, ranging from $450 quarterly in Alberta to $298 quarterly in Newfoundland and Labrador.

  • $1,800 in Alberta ($450 quarterly).
  • $1,200 in Manitoba ($300 quarterly).
  • $1,120 in Ontario ($280 quarterly).
  • $1,504 in Saskatchewan ($376 quarterly).
  • $760 in New Brunswick ($190 quarterly).
  • $824 in Nova Scotia ($206 quarterly).
  • $880 in Prince Edward Island ($220 quarterly); and,
  • $1,192 in Newfoundland and Labrador ($298 quarterly).

According to the CRA's website, taxpayers are advised to anticipate CCR deposits alongside tax refunds if they use direct deposit and to allow 10 working days after the expected payment date before contacting them.

Additional payment dates for the CCR in 2024 are scheduled for July 15 and October 15, excluding April.

As of April 1, the federal carbon tax has increased to $80 per tonne.
