Team Canada defeated the Czech Republic with a final score of 5-1 at the World Juniors on Saturday night. Unfortunately a high hit by defencemen Jared McIsaac on Jachym Kondelik has resulted in a suspension for one game.
Team Canada scored three goals in the first period. The first at 6:03 when Maxime Comtois put the puck in the net from Owen Tippett and Markus Phillips, but the Czehs tied it up shortly after.
The second point got put on the board by Brett Leason from Ty Smith and Morgan Frost on a power play. Alexis Lafreniere scored the third goal for Canada from Jack Studnicka and Josh Brook.
In the second period MacKenzie Entwistle got on the board scoring a goal from Joe Veleno and Jack Studnicka. In the third the Czechs changed their goalie and racked up penalties with Jan Kern for elbowing, and Martin Necas’s in the penalty box for checking from behind and a 10-minute misconduct penalty.
Morgan Frost scored Canada’s final goal from Nick Suzuki and Ty Smith on a power play at 9:01 in the third bringing the score to 5-1 Canada.
The next game is today December 31 at 5 p m PST against Team Russia.
Team Russia comes into the match like Canada with three wins in the tournament and no losses.
