A stone memorial is nearing completion for the late Kristian Ayoungman.

When asked about when the memorial will be unveiled to the community, Donna McCallum, Town of Strathmore Manager of Operations said “We’re working with Kristian’s family to ensure the memorial meets their expectations. Once we have all the pieces in place we’ll share an unveiling date with the community.”

The memorial is located in Kinsmen Park beside the new Strathmore Municipal Building. McCallum spoke about the composition of the materials used in the memorial.

“When the idea for a memorial was proposed, it was clear from the beginning that natural stone blocks had significance to the family. For me, I see the importance of these stone pillars representing how each of us can stand up against racism,” she said.

Brandon Giffen was found guilty of manslaughter in the death of Ayoungman. His brother, Kody Giffen, was also found guilty of manslaughter earlier this year.

It’s believed that on March 16, 2019, the victim and accused were both at the King Eddy Pub in Strathmore, where it is believed the two groups of people fought.

Regarding the charges of manslaughter, Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Robert Hall said, “I cannot conclude beyond a reasonable doubt that the accused subjectively knew it was likely that death would result from him firing the rifle. Aiming and shooting the rifle was a shameful and reckless decision by the accused. But I cannot say the accused knew that death was the likely consequence of him doing so.”

Hall said Brandon and Kody Giffen were “actively engaged” in chasing the victim’s group out of Strathmore.
