This summer get ready to kick off a series of events to help the Strathmore Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 10 celebrate the centennial of the Great Memorial Hall.

The Centennial Celebration will take place from July 8 to July 11, Jennifer Franssen, PR Chair for the centennial celebration committee spoke of the excitement surrounding the announcement.

“It's pretty remarkable that a building can survive in good condition at 100 years old,” she said.

The Strathmore Legion is one of the oldest Royal Canadian Legion branches in Alberta. It received its charter in 1926.

The sod was originally turned at the Great War Memorial Hall on May 2, 1921, and the hall was officially opened to the public on July 11, 1922

“It’s pretty exciting. This is the celebration of the Great War Memorial Hall, which has been a community hall for 100 years. There's not a lot of communities that can boast of having an active community building 100 years in,” she explained.

“We're hoping to invite the community to come to check it out because there's lots of history attached to the building."

Events planned for the centennial will include a daily open house with displays, a centennial dinner to honour veterans from the Strathmore and Wheatland County region, a community barbecue, darts, live entertainment and dance, a pancake breakfast, golf tournament, and the Great Memorial Hall Rededication Ceremony.
