Farmers Not Off The Hook With Carbon Tax Exemption

Farmers are exempt from paying the federal carbon tax on their fuel, but that doesn't mean they're off the hook.

Under the Trudeau Government's National Climate Plan, farmers in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and New Brunswick, will still pay the carbon tax on propane and natural gas used to heat barns and dry grain.

When the climate plan takes effect in April, these farmers will be subject to the same tax Alberta farmers pay under the provincial carbon tax.

Cow Slaughter Numbers Up

A market analyst with Cattle Trends says cow slaughter in Canada is up 15 per cent from last year.

Anne Wasko says more cows were going to slaughter after the difficult winter and calving season, which continued to run at a higher rate through the year.
