Alberta is taking a major step towards the end of COVID-19 health measures.

Over the weekend, the Alberta government announced on Mar.1, Step two of easing public health measures would move forward as planned.

“After these past two years, we have finally turned a major corner on COVID-19. All of the data, both here in Alberta and right across the world, says that the worst of Covid is behind us,” said Premier Jason Kenney.

As of Tuesday, indoor masking is no longer required, capacity limits and rules around social gatherings are scrapped, and mandatory work from home is lifted. Other measures lifted include all remaining restrictions on schools and youth activities.

Masks will still be required in certain settings, such as public transit and healthcare settings, including Alberta Health Services sites and long-term care facilities.

Kenney also announced they would be proposing amendments to the Municipal Government Act so that municipalities would not be allowed to implement their own public health guidelines.

“As we safely move beyond COVID restrictions, we need clarity, consistency, and unity. It would be confusing and divisive to have multiple different public health policies,” he explained.

A date for moving to step three, which would see the province eliminate all COVID-19 health measures, including mandatory isolation and measures on continuing care, has not been determined.
