If you've been keeping up with Strathmore Reds' baseball, you're probably familiar with the name Aubrey Stender. The 15-year-old slugger from the 15UAA team lit up the league with many home runs, and his success in Strathmore didn't go unnoticed, as he is now playing on Team Alberta's U16 team!

This Thanksgiving weekend, Stender will be in the ‘Best of the West - Turkey Challenge’ Tournament in Kamloops, BC. He's looking forward to what should be a great tournament weekend.

"It's really exciting, it's a privilege to be able to play on that team and be chosen to go up to Kamloops this weekend and take part in the tournament."

It was a lengthy process to make it here, he first had to try out for the provincial zone tournament, and once he made it to the zone tournament he then had to be one of the top 30 players in Southern Alberta.

From there, he had another tryout with those 30 players plus 30 more from the North, and after all that he was finally selected to be a part of Team Alberta.  An accomplishment as big as this takes a lot of work, and Stender said all the support he received also helped him make it to Team Alberta.

"(it took) a lot of practice, and it was very helpful when my teammates and coaches encouraged me to push harder and want to get better throughout the season so that I would have a chance to try out and try for the team."

While the immediate future will feature Stender on Team Alberta, he hopes to keep baseball in his life as long as possible.

"The goal would be to play at the highest level possible. Go to the highest level possible, and hopefully make the big leagues."

Good luck to Stender and the rest of Team Alberta in the Thanksgiving weekend tournament!
