It’s almost back to school time and with kids in the public and catholic school systems heading back to class, it’s time to remember that school zones will soon be back in effect.

Students go back to class in Golden Hills School Division on September 6, and in Christ the Redeemer Catholic Schools on August 31.

Marketing and Communications Analyst Danielle Jensen highlighted some things about a few things motorists should keep in mind when travelling near school and playground zones.

“Motorists should slow down to a maximum of 30km per hour upon approaching the school zone. Keep an eye out for children, especially at cross walks, and don’t attempt to pass another vehicle traveling in the school zone,” said Jensen.

“Children returning to school are often excited, and may be distracted when they cross the road. Keeping a watchful eye can ensure Strathmore’s students make it to school safely,” she said.

She added it's important to be mindful about where you're dropping your children off, or picking them back up.

“Drivers should also obey parking and non-parking signs. Make sure you’re using the correct drop-off and pick-up lanes/parking lots when you’re taking your child to school. Choosing the correct place to drop-off and pick-up ensures the school bus lanes stay open, and helps control vehicle traffic where children are entering the school.”

“Taking the time to slow down and pay extra attention is important. We should take a 'safety first' mentality to ensure the welfare of students returning to school this fall,” Jensen said.

Once school starts, the school zones will be in effect at these times:

8:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.

11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

3:00 p.m, – 4:30 p.m.
