A scary sight was on Highway 1 in Strathmore on Saturday, but luckily it wasn't nearly as bad as it looked.

At around 2:15 PM on Sat. July 9, a collision occurred between an RCMP vehicle and a civilian car at the Wheatland Trail- Highway 1 intersection. The damage to both cars was extensive, but the injuries were minor.

"There were minor injuries but nothing that required hospitalizations or more than on-site treatment," said Strathmore RCMP Detachment Commander Staff Sergeant Mark Wielgosz.

The crash occurred when the RCMP vehicle was dispatched to a priority call and had to go through the intersection. At the time the RCMP vehicle had to go through a red light to cross the intersection, which is how the accident occurred.

"The member's lights and sirens were activated. They slowed down to negotiate the intersection, and as the police vehicle was crossing into the east bound lanes that's where our vehicle collided with another that was in the intersection at the time. The eastbound traffic was still moving at the time the member was crossing through the intersection, which is where the collision had occurred," Wielgosz said.

Wielgosz added it's too early to tell how much it will cost for the vehicle damage.
