The Eastern Irrigation District, a Brooks-based water management agency, is facing 10 charges in connection to a workplace-related death.

A diver who worked for the company died in October 2022 as the company was working on underwater maintenance at the Lake Newell reservoir gates. Although what happened to the diver is unclear, his remains were recovered several days after he disappeared under the water.

According to Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), the agency had not properly assessed the work site and had no response plan in the case of an emergency. The province also claimed that the Eastern Irrigation District was not properly training employees or ensuring their safety.

The company had allegedly also failed to shut off pipes and ducts before the dive while also failing to lock the intake mechanism.

StrathmoreNow has reached out to Eastern Irrigation District for an interview but have not received a response back.
