Ornaments come in all shapes and sizes and some of the most treasured are made from very small hands.

I thought my homemade ornaments were lost in the Christmas vortex, but my mom made sure they were taken good care of over the past few decades and gave them back when she cleaned out some cupboards.

Ornaments have been around for centuries but didn't become commercially popular in North America until the late 1840s when a published depiction of Queen Victoria celebrating Christmas with her German-born husband, Prince Albert, around a decorated evergreen transformed the practice into a fashionable one that wealthy Americans soon rushed to adopt.

In short order, local businesses caught on to the ornament’s commercial potential and in the mid-1930s, over 250,000 ornaments were imported to the United States.

And in 1973 Hallmark introduced their "Keepsake" ornaments with their very first collection including glass baubles and little yarn figures.

I still remember making some of these and it has brought back some great holiday memories, of glitter everywhere, glue in my hair, and cotton balls by the bagful!

Kids bring home new ornaments with pride every year to be displayed on the tree, share a photo of your favourite ornament this year in the comments!
