With four shows, including High River's Guy Weadick Days, already postponed or cancelled, a lot of us are waiting to see what's going to happen to the Calgary Stampede.

One of those waiting is Foothills chuckwagon driver, Mark Sutherland, who says he's as in the dark as the rest of us.

"I can't imagine the Calgary Stampede being what it was in 2019. I don't see that happening. I think there's a possibility that you know, wagon races happen at the Stampede Grounds. I just don't know when. I just hope it's before 2021. If it isn't, I guess that's the next time we'll see and hear thundering hooves in Calgary."

Sutherland, says they can be flexible if they need to be when it comes to re-scheduling events.

"The chuckwagon community can be ready. If we shifted everything into August and September. Certainly, the chuckwagon community can be ready. Obviously we've lost two shows, so we're not going to get nine more shows like we had planned."

He says the other big problem is sponsorship.

With a recession on the horizon, money is going to be tough to come by.

"If you can't help recoup some of the costs through sponsorship, then I think you're going to see names that people are used to being in the sport, I think you're just going to see them out of the sport. You know, there's a possibility that I'm one of them. Because of the sponsorship isn't going to rebound when this all ends, then I think maybe this is going to be the change in the sport that nobody was hoping for."

Sutherland says a decision needs to be made soon, so drivers have enough time to prepare their horses for the season.

The first race of the season that hasn't been cancelled yet is the Ponoka Stampede set for Friday, June 26 to Wednesday, July 1.
