Today Strathmore has a permanent marker explaining part of the history surrounding the original Strathmore Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) train station, which was located along what is now Lakeside Boulevard.

On August 23, working in partnership the Town of Strathmore, Communities in Bloom (CiB) and Western District Historical Society (WDHS) met to show off the new marker to the community.

The new plaque was purchased by Communities in Bloom.

Also in attendance were town councillors, Denise Peterson, and Bob Sobol along with members of both organizations CiB and WDHS.

“I wanted to thank the Western District Historical Society for all your work that you have done over the years to promote history and to help Strathmore remember its roots and its past,” said Mayor Pat Fule.

“This latest edition, the plaque and the signage that you have got put up in this area, is going to do a great deal to educate and show people where we came from,” he said. The mayor explained that the signage is very close to the original site of the train station, located meters away from the Lambert Centre.

“We are celebrating the fact that this area, and hopefully at some point this park, could be something that the public can enjoy and remember the CPR station where Strathmore got its beginnings,” said Fule.

“Many of its residents and many of its business people and all sorts of commerce came through here,” he noted. “We’re very excited about this being part of our downtown beauty as well as education for the public,” said Fule.

The mayor gave thanks to Tom Sadler, the Western District Historical Society and Communities in Bloom. Sadler was recognized by the Town of Strathmore for his efforts at preserving local history.

“We want to also thank Tom Sadler for all his hard work and dedication. You bring your passion for history and your talents in photography to life when you do projects like this and I know you were very instrumental into this,” said Fule.

Sadler was presented with a gift from the Town of Strathmore and at a later date he will also be presented with a personalized letter from the town.
