If you’re in the Strathmore region this week you might see smoke in the air, the Strathmore Fire Department is advising the public that from April 27th to May 4th they will be completing a Hazard Reduction Course. The course will include controlled burns explained Fire Chief Dave Sturgeon.

“We'll be doing some live burning on some grass ditches and fields,” he said, in order for firefighters to train on how to control grass fires if they get out of hand.

The training will include firefighters from Chestermere and Siksika Nation. The fire department will be assisted by a company that will help with strategies and tactics.

He said it is a great opportunity for firefighters to get together with their partners in neighbouring communities.

For now, the Strathmore Fire Department has completed their ice rescue training. Next, residents will see members of the fire department on the water completing drills.

They will also be taking applications in August and conducting interviews in September for a few paid on-call firefighter positions.
