It isn’t time for shorts just yet. This morning it felt like waking up to January winter weather in Strathmore.

We spoke with Meteorologist Terri Lang, with Environment and Climate Change Canada about the cold weather and what Strathmore can expect heading into the long weekend.

Terri Lang meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada explained that this kind of weather is typical for this time of year on the prairies.”It's spring on the Prairie and we can see from the record temperatures just from the area that these temperatures can happen and get even colder than that."

"Because we're still in that battle zone with the warmer air to the South and the colder air to the North we know that these cold outbreaks can occur, and this particular cold outbreak is covering all of Western Canada,” she said.

She noted that this kind of weather could last into May.

“That's what spring on the prairies is about, it's quite a quite a yoyo or quite a roller coaster is how we describe it,” she said.

“We will expect these cooler conditions to continue into the long weekend with highs struggling to even get above the freezing mark, and snow on and off. It doesn't look too bad for accumulations, but enough to be annoying after the long weekend.” She explained that the weather is showing signs that things are trying to recover and get closer to average.

After that, there should be more of a westerly flow in the upper atmosphere, “That tends to bring warmer temperatures and more seasonal temperatures as opposed to the colder ones that we're seeing now,” she said.

It looks cloudy with a small chance of snow today (Tuesday) and a high of – 3 C but will feel cooler with winds possibly picking up to around 50 KM. We’re in store for a few cloudy days heading into the long weekend, but there is an upside said Lang we can expect sunshine with a forecasted high of 12 C in Strathmore next Monday.
