Olds College is expanding their Smart Farm with a generous land donation.

The total 316 acres near Carstairs was donated from the estate of Willem Pitstra, valued at $1.2 million.

The College says their Smart Farm uses innovative practices and technology for hands-on learning.

Willem and his wife Marrigje, both immigrated to Canada from Holland before they met, and growing up during the Second World War, educational opportunities were limited.

Daughter, Jackie Pitstra, says both her parents would be thrilled to know the farmland will be contributing to improving farming practices in the province and around the world, as well as furthering education opportunities.

"I believe my Dad felt that the college would appreciate the land and that by donating to the school he would be contributing towards a legacy of education for future generations."

Willem was a welder and worked on projects like the ice arena at the Calgary Saddledome, and Marrigje was a Horticulturist and award-winning Gardner.

Olds College thanks the family for their gift which will have a lasting impact on agricultural education.
