A recent internet challenge has been surfacing across social media asking people to donate $5 to a local animal shelter in honour of longtime entertainer Betty White, who passed away on New Year's Eve.

Long-time volunteer at Happy Cat Sanctuary, Debbie Jensen, thinks the initiative is a fantastic idea.

“Oh, we're really hoping to help celebrate her life. It would be so nice and we can use all the help we can get. We have had a lot of cats this year.”

The shelter has been at capacity for a couple of months now, and vet bills to treat cats who have been injured during this last cold spell are racking up.

Jensen sees this challenge as the perfect way to celebrate a global icon that has made many people smile.

“I have always been a fan of Betty White. She was such a happy-go-lucky woman that could make everyone laugh wherever she went. She also just loved animals so much. I think that she will be smiling down on that day and be like ‘oh, look what I made happen.”

It is hard for Jensen to not relate with White and her mission to save all animals.

“She was always looking after lost or abandoned animals and animals that were abused. She just couldn’t stand the thought of an animal being abused.”

If you would like to participate in the challenge, you can e-transfer your donation to happycatsanctuary@gmail.com, or phone 403-804-8571 to arrange a time to drop off your donation.
