Thanksgiving, turkey day or the day of thanks is an entire day that is dedicated to bringing families, friends and communities closer together to celebrate what they are the most fortunate for in their lives.

For most, Thanksgiving is also a day to enjoy a big turkey dinner. This tradition is enjoyed by many, but some may not be fortunate enough to afford a big meal. However, there are ways the community can help deliver a great dinner for everyone to enjoy.

Executive Director of the Strathmore Overnight Shelter Elizabeth Karp said that it is important to give back to people who don't have anywhere to go for the holidays.

"There's a lot of people that are very much alone, a lot of people have been left out in the street because they can't find a place to live. A lot of seniors as well because they can't afford to live anymore."

Coming just in for a warm cooked meal is something that Karp says happens more often than not because maybe they can't quite make it to the next food hamper day, and they need a meal.

"We also allow that for people in need and a lot of them are very much alone. Our shelter is very much family orientated and so a lot of my guests that come in, they'll say that to me, they say that we are a very nice shelter."

Karp explains that help can go a long way at the Overnight Shelter.

"Any help would be appreciated, and any monetary gifts would be wonderful as well, obviously but anything that people are willing to give is a lot of help."

The Strathmore Overnight Shelter will also be having their biggest fundraiser of the year, 'Before it gets Cold March' that will be taking place on October 28.

You can drop off any donations at the door of Strathmore Overnight Shelter off the deck, Harvest Healing Centre Church, 102 Canal Gardens or at the Shelter any time after 7:00 pm.
