Game one is the books for the first round of the playoffs for the Strathmore Wheatland Kings.

On Tuesday night the Kings hit the ice in front of a packed house to take on the High River Flyers in game one of the first round of this season's playoffs.

"The crowd was great. It was probably our biggest crowd of the year. To all of the listeners out there, thank you so much for the support," said general manager for the Kings, Lee Smith.

After the first period with a goal by Joel Romano from Gavin Smith the team was up 1-0, from there the goals kept coming with, Spencer Tower, O'Shea Red Crow, Garret Vander Ploeg and Nathon Feick all getting on the score sheet.

"Our third line and the fourth line really chipped in last night. They had three out of the five goals. It was a real team effort," Smith continued.

This year's team has a lot of rookies who are experiencing the playoffs for the first time and they came to play on Tuesday with four of the five goals coming from rookies and the fifth netted by veteran Garret Vander Ploeg.

The team will be heading to High River on Friday night for game two and if game three is needed they will be back in Strathmore Saturday night with an 8 p.m. start.

“It is a real relief to be onto a good start, The last two times we have played High River, we’ve lost, so for us to win the first game of a three-game series is huge."
