Ian Tyson has passed away at the age of 89.

The legendary singer-songwriter who lived in the Longview area for many years has died.

Tyson known for his often-covered song Four Strong Winds was known around the world because of the massive hit from the early 1960's.

Many people might remember his folk music days of that era however he was known for his very pro stance on Country and Western music.

He was inducted into a number of Halls of Fame during his career including the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame in 1989, the Canadian Music Hall of Fame along with his former wife Sylvia Tyson. He also was awarded a Member of the Order of Canada in 1994 and he was also given a Governer General's Performing Arts Award.

He was inducted into the Alberta Order of Excellence in 2006.

Some of his hits included Navajo Rug, Springtime in Alberta, Magpie and Cowboys don't Cry.

The family will hold a closed service and have requested privacy at this time.
