At this time last year some of us may have already been golfing or spending time outside, but this year the lingering snow has all but assured outdoor activities may have to wait. However, the snow does have one huge benefit, as it could give farmers a great start to their season.

Farmer Curtis Tower with Tower Ranches says the snow sticking around means seeding could get off to a strong start.

"I think it's some good moisture that we can start with in the Spring when it gets here. It gives us a good start for our seeding and gets the seed germinating fast and in good condition," he said.

Tower said they normally don't start seeding until around May 1, so the snow hasn't impacted his current plans and Tower Ranches can proceed with their normal schedule. So long as the moisture from the snow goes into the ground and doesn't run off, Tower expects his seeds to grow fast, thus avoiding potential issues.

"If it sits too long in dry soil you can run into problems with seed diseases and leaf diseases and bugs, all kinds of things like that."

While there are plenty of things that could happen later in the season, Tower appreciates that for now, it looks like farmers could enjoy a smooth start to seeding

"You never know what's going to happen in the Summer time, what weather comes along. But it's always encouraging to start out with good germination, the good moisture that allows your seeds to germinate early."
