As the old saying goes, you can't predict the weather. However, Kyle Fougere a meteorologist for Environment and Climate Change Canada is going to give it his best shot anyway.

“For the three month period, upcoming May, June, July, we are expecting in the Strathmore area things to be slightly above normal for temperature and slightly below normal for precipitation. Indications are so far that we're going to see slightly hotter than normal and continued with a little bit drier than normal.”

Fougere also noted that a low-pressure weather system will be moving through the Strathmore area this week, bringing cooler temperatures and a decent chance for rain. Hopefully ending the dry spell the area has been facing; however, a cold spell and rain could create great conditions for a storm. Fougere explains why the Foothills area seems to love making storms

"Moving through this weekend, we could see some thunderstorms, but it's really towards the end of the month where we start to see a real increase in the province in the number of thunderstorms and that tends to peak as we move towards the June and July period, which is obviously very thundery. We have a lot of really severe thunderstorms. It's just the way that our foothills form these from the wind shear that we can get. That really helps them develop into strong thunderstorms.”

Fougere speaks about one important measure concerned residents can take to prevent themselves from getting caught in storms

“The best thing to do is to make sure to have a way to receive weather information. As we move into the warmer months, people tend to move around a lot. Whether it's camping or activities on the weekends or out playing sports. It's important to know how to get weather information, should there be a severe weather threat where you are located, the best way to do that is to make sure that they have the Environment Canada weather app or that they follow along on our website.”
