Alberta’s Justice Minister is facing a pretty serious investigation.

Retired Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta Justice Adèle Kent will investigate a phone call from Justice Minister Kaycee Madu to the chief of the Edmonton Police Service.

Justice Kent’s investigation will determine whether Madu’s phone call to Chief Dale McFee on March 10, 2021, after receiving a traffic ticket, constituted interference or an attempt to interfere with the administration of justice.

Madu has claimed he called the police chief to discuss being racially profiled.

“I think it's important to figure out what happened here,” commented MLA for Chestermere-Strathmore, Leela Sharon Aheer. “Regardless of the phone call that's going to come up in that in that investigation, if you are racially profiled, that's just gross and we need to fix that for sure.

“We can't have people ever feeling like they're being pulled over or something like that is happening because of what they look like.”

“Having said that, I'm really glad that there's an independent review. I think it was the right thing to do to see what happened.”

Kent will report her findings to the deputy minister of the Executive Council by Feb. 15. The results of her investigation will be made public.
