More than 11,000 reports of fraud in Alberta in 2018 prove that the problem of fraudsters is a real, ongoing issue.

Which is why the Alberta RCMP are putting fraud at the forefront for the entire month of March, Fraud Prevention Month in the province.  Of the 11,000 reported cases of fraud last year, impersonation and identity-related fraud incidents accounted for 14 percent of all reported frauds for the year.

Constable William Lewadniuk is a Financial Crimes Investigator with the RCMP and says fraud is something the force takes very seriously.  He has some tips to protect yourself by learning how to recognize fraud.

"Pretty much, if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.  Ignore communications from unknown contacts,  Only purchase items from reputable organizations,  Never send money on a dating site.  Regularly monitor credit card statements for unknown charges.  Research organizations by the Better Business Bureau, and don't leave personal information in your vehicle either."

Everyone is welcome to get more tips on preventing fraud at a police event tomorrow (March 2) at Cross Iron Mills Mall at Balzac.  The day has been organized by the Calgary Police Service in cooperation with Southern Alberta RCMP.  Lewadniuk explains what will be happening.

"We'll have members from the RCMP, Consumer Services Canada, the Calgary Police.  We'll be talking about fraud prevention.  We'll be there to do Q&A on any questions the public may have and we'll also have samples and books regarding common fraud."

Attendees will also have the chance to get their picture taken with a Mountie and their mascot, Monty the Safety Bear.  It will also be a chance to prevent fraud by having your old hard drives, tapes, and phones without batteries shredded.
