The Rockyford Fire Department (RFD) has been a community staple for 100 years and will be celebrating its centennial this Saturday. RFD Deputy Fire Chief Darcy Burke has been a firefighter for more than 25 years, and says being able to celebrate and take part in a historic milestone like this is special.

"It's very exciting for the Rockyford Fire Department to be celebrating their Centennial year. Back on February 5 1923 is when the Rockyford Fire Brigade was organized, and we've seen throughout many years since then, the department has transitioned to an outstanding and well-equipped modern fire department and protecting the citizens of Rockyford and our surrounding area," he said.

Since it opened its doors 100 years ago, the RFD has always been a volunteer organization. Being a volunteer firefighter takes hundreds of hours of training and commitment, and once you become a firefighter it could require you to drop whatever you're doing at a moment's notice to respond to an emergency. It certainly isn't easy, but Burke said he and all the firefighters are happy to step up and provide this vital community service.

"I think one of the biggest things that inspire volunteers to step forward for a local fire department is the fact that they're community members and they want to be able to help folks. I think at the end of the day it's community commitment and the desire to help people in their time of need."

Because they're all volunteers, Burke added he feels there's an extra connection to the community, as the firefighters do it all not out of obligation, but out of love for their community.

"There certainly is a connection there and there's an ability for us to recognize some sympathetic appeal for the folks during their time of need and to offer that comfort."

Given that Burke has been with the RFD for more than 25 years, that means he was a member for a quarter of the RFD's entire lifespan! During his time he said he's seen a lot change, including equipment upgrades and a growing team. Beyond that, he said he's seen the firefighters grow closer together as they continue to protect the community.

"I've seen a real family form of people who join a volunteer fire department and you really watch out for each other, you have each other's back, and that's some of the very key things I've seen in my past 25 years.

The festivities will take place on April 15 at the Rockyford Fire Hall. Events start at 10:00 a.m. with fire hall tours and a hose pumping competition, and that will be followed by a free barbecue from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. At 1:00 p.m. there will be a vehicle extrication demonstration, and the day will conclude with a private supper and social at the Rockyford Community Centre.

Burke hopes the entire community takes part in the historic celebration.

"I just want to thank the commitment of the community and their support of the Rockyford Fire Department for the past 100 years. There's been many fundraisers done to purchase equipment and to provide funds for training and Rockyford and surrounding community have been 100% behind the fire department, and we just owe a big thanks to that support."
