A bylaw that could see the creation of Siksika Nation Peace Officers on the reserve is one step closer.

The Siksika Nation is now calling for public input into the Siksika Nation Peace Officer Bylaw No. 2022-01.

On March 9, the Chief and Council heard the third and final reading of the bylaw.

The purpose is to appoint peace offices on the First Nation reserve.

The proposed bylaw noted that the Siksika Public Safety Manager will directly oversee the day-to-day activities of the peace officers.

According to the First Nation, the bylaw has also been reviewed by Siksika nation’s legal counsel,  Fox and Fraser LLP, and is authorized to be posted for public comment.

The period for public comment will close on April 1.
