Strathmore is experiencing another heat wave.

The hot temperatures over the coming days bring increasing chances of heat-related injuries and illness.

Dr Jason Cabaj with Alberta Health Services says there are some risks when it comes to this prolonged heat.

"There is a range of health effects with exposure to heat, it can be heat cramps or up to the most serious, heatstroke."

Heat stroke is caused when the body can no longer regulate its own body temperature.

Cabaj also says it's important to limit your exposure while outside.

"I think in general, try to avoid prolonged exposure for a long period of time, whether that is rescheduling any outdoor activities you have or limiting labour in the heat."

There are a number of warning signs to heat exhaustion and heat stroke such as a high body temperature, lack of sweat, confusion, fainting, and unconsciousness. Particular vigilance is urged for vulnerable individuals, including children, seniors, individuals with pre-existing lung, heart, kidney, nervous system, mental health or diabetic conditions, outdoor workers, as well as those who are socially isolated.
