The Strathmore Thunder Fastpitch U13 baseball team took home gold in their division in the recent Okotokes Fury Tournament.

The girls played a close final game and took home the gold with a score of 17-16 in extra innings.

Head Coach Matt MacInnis couldn't be happier with the success of his girls and the future of his team as they are currently enjoying a record season with 12 wins, 2 losses, and one tie.

“It's just great being with the girls. they're a lot of fun and it's fun to watch them get better as things go on. Every time we go out there you see things you wouldn't have seen from them two weeks ago. Seeing how they persevere through different things, it's fun to watch.”

With a great season and bringing home gold in their first tournament, The U13 Strathmore Thunder has built up a lot of momentum as MacInnis notes.

“We had a good season, that was our first tournament of the year so we got to justify the good season we had."

"With the team heading into playdowns for their division it was good to play in this tournament as they got the chance to see some of these teams in action explained MacInnis, "We don't know necessarily what the rest of the competition looks like. So we got to see a few other teams this weekend, teams from Red Deer and from Calgary that are not in our division. Plus there's a little adversity at these ball tournaments, rainouts, and injuries so to come out on the good side of it was great for sure.”

With a record season and gold under their belt, the team is heading to playoffs, which are starting today. MacInnis illustrates what's in store for his team in their next playoff game.

"It's a double-elimination tournament, there are two divisions and so they seated all the teams and we'll play down. Effectively the top team plays the bottom team, the 2nd place team plays the second last team and you just play down until we have a winner. If you lose your first game, you can still continue on, but you just have to win a whole bunch more games to get back to the final."

This may just be the start to the Strathmore Thunder's success. If the Strathmore Thunder make it to the division finals on the weekend of June 20th, MacInnis will have much more to celebrate alongside his hard-working and constantly improving team.
