There is less than a week until the fifth annual Wheatland & Area Hospice Society’s Hike For Hospice, the annual fundraiser will be a 5 km run or walk around Kinsmen and Gray’s Park on May 1.

Tamara Desjardins with Wheatland & Area Hospice Society explained that this year’s Hike for Hospice will be back in-person.

“It’s going to be a walk or run or you can just do a donation,” she said. Participants can walk, run or cycle.

Donations can be made online or pledges will be accepted in person, and individuals will receive a charitable tax receipt. Light refreshments will also be provided and this year Kelly Montford from Transcend Yoga will be performing a warmup with participants.

Desjardins explained that the funds gained from Hike for Hospice support plans for a new hospice and palliative care facility, in addition to supporting current end-of-life care.

“It's not just the physical building,  it's the care that you get when you are in your end of days when you are in palliative care,” she said.

Dr. Joni McNeely- president of Wheatland and Area Hospice Society thankful to be back, “I am grateful for the volunteers that have come together for this event after holding it virtually last year and cancelling in 2020. We will have dignitaries at the opening ceremony, face painting, door prizes, music/DJ, and a few displays. People can drop in to walk or just make a donation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.”

Registration starts at 11 am with the opening ceremonies starting at 12 p.m, dignitaries will include Mayor Fule and MLA Leela Sharon Aheer.

McNeely explained that it will also be an opportunity for friends and family to come together on a very nice day, to walk and make some memories and it’s a great way to come out to learn about and support the Wheatland and Area Hospice Society who are striving to provide extensive hospice care and local palliative care in the community.
