It was a special trip to Grimshaw Alberta for two local crib players and legion members who represented Strathmore in a big way. Richard Westgard and Rose Jeffrey are Senior Champions after winning the Alberta/NWT Senior Cribbage Tournament.

Richard explained how they got there.

"We had to win here (Strathmore) first to move onto the district then we went to the district and came in second place, then first place couldn't go so we went."

Rose said that while she was playing her game, Richard was watching the board and she thought he was just walking around but he was definitely keeping a close eye on things.

"After everything was over he told me we were tied with High River for 14 points and then we were tied for 17 points and then 20 and then they were on a bye and we won again so we beat them by one point I couldn't believe it when he told me we won."

The chance to represent the community and the Strathmore Legion meant a lot to them both Richard noted.

"It was very special to have somebody win the seniors crib, I think it was the first time from this legion someone had won."

Along with the title the pair came home with a plaque that will be displayed at the legion and a badge and a crest saying they are the champions for 2022/2023.

Crib is a staple at the legion. Rose explained that they get together every Thursday to play and can have six to eight tables of people playing each week.

"Ever since it is over with covid everyone has been coming out to play and it only costs us five dollars to play and last week the prize money was 70 dollars and everyone is just happy to come and we have new people coming every week"

When asked how long they had been playing crib Rose chuckled saying forever, and it seems that all of that play and practice definitely paid off for the duo.
