Plenty of discs were flying around this weekend as Strathmore’s disc golf course saw plenty of traffic. The town was host to the Disc Golf Provincial Championships on Saturday and Sunday which brought players in from all over Alberta with some players from B.C. and Saskatchewan as well.

Strathmore was represented quite well in the tournament with 26 local players competing. Todd Kennedy, Strathmore Disc Golf Club Director and Tournament Director for the Championships said the weekend went really well.

Kennedy talked about some of the highlights from the tournament and said, “The winner of the men’s professional side, won by a huge margin. His name was Casey Hanemayer out of B.C. and he came up with a minus 27 over two rounds.” Kennedy said Hanemayer beat the next closest player by 14 strokes.

Kennedy mentioned another highlight of the weekend was when a local boy, Vaughn Hoffman, in the under 15 division hit an ace on hole 11. An ace is when a player gets their disc in the basket in one throw. Kennedy explained this was Hoffman’s first ace and that another player from out of town also hit an ace on hole two.

Kennedy talked about the ace’s and said, “That was really, really cool. There was a whole lot of shouting and cheering and it was fantastic!”

According to Kennedy, this tournament saw the highest number of young players than any other disc golf event in Alberta. 21 under 18-year-old players participated in this tournament, “It was just so fun to see a great variety of ages and all skill levels playing.”

When asked how the season went this year Kennedy explained, “It was just phenomenal. We had more people than ever playing on weekly league nights. There were more people than ever just playing whenever they got to it.”

He said he wanted to give a huge shout out to the Town of Strathmore for all the hard work they do to take care of the green spaces where the course is located.

Kennedy said the season will be wrapping up soon as it gets into the colder months but that doesn’t stop some players from playing during the winter. He said when the winter months come, some people will still be out using the course. Kennedy explained a lot of people just duct tape ribbon to their discs so they can find them in the snowbanks.

Lastly, Kennedy wants to thank the Strathmore Disc Golf Club for all the hard work that was put in to make the Provincial Championships a success. “Without all these people helping with the course set up, marshaling, spotting, dealing with registration, and even cleaning up, it couldn’t happen.”
