It's almost the end of the school year. Now that COVID-19 restrictions have eased for the most part in the province, what will graduation look like in local schools?

For the past two years, local graduates have had virtual ceremonies or drive-thru grads. This year, there is a possibility the event could be held in person.

Superintendent of Schools for Golden Hills School Division Bevan Daverne says their division follows the current public health orders.

“Right now there are no limiting factors as far as our in-person ceremonies, whether it be awards or graduation or any of those kinds of things,” he said.

Daverne's expectation is to have the event be a little more "normal."

“I think from parents' perspective it'll feel a lot more normal. I think our graduates are really looking forward to that, families are looking forward to that and I think our schools too.”

He noted that because traditional ceremonies haven’t been held for the last couple of years, this could be an opportunity for individual schools to make a few improvements to their ceremonies.

“It is an opportunity to talk about what you want to continue with and what you'd like to add. I think from the graduates' perspective, lots of things that they are hoping will happen like the face-to-face graduation, or having the full gym those are on the table almost everywhere,” he concluded.

At Strathmore High School graduation is scheduled for May 28. Graduation ceremonies for Holy Cross Collegiate will be on June 11.
