Strathmore library staff celebrates on Canadian Library Workers' Day

The Canadian Federation of Library Associations (CFLA) has designated the third Friday in October as Canadian Library Workers Day. This is a day to recognize all the hard work that goes into working at a library and providing many valuable community services. October is also Canadian Library Month, so having the workers day in October is a fitting time for this celebration.

Assistant Director of Library Services at the Strathmore Municipal Library Carmen Erison explained the library is much more than just a place for books.

"Libraries are so much more than books. People want to think that libraries are going by the wayside with print, but libraries are adapting every day. We have everything from special collections to free programs, adult literacy programs, our art gallery, and our room rental spaces.  And honestly just having a safe space for everyone in the community to come gather, chat with a friend, and maybe make a new friend. That's what the library is about, being able to have a place where everybody feels safe, welcome, and happy," she said.

Erison has been working for libraries for more than 20 years, and she says it's the perfect job. She says her favorite part of the job is how involved you are in the community.

"The public support of the library really makes this job worthwhile, and I'm honored to work with such a tremendous staff, hardworking staff here at the library. Honestly, it's just made this one of the best jobs I've ever had."

Public Services Coordinator Laura Henderson also says the community aspect is the best part of the job.

"I love the idea of being able to offer services to people with reduced barriers and just be a part of the community in that way," Henderson said.

Our library continues to be a key part of our community, and with such a hard-working and positive staff, it's no surprise that it continues to thrive and be as involved as they are.

"This is probably the best profession I think I probably could have landed in and honestly, it's been the best decision of my life," said Erison.
