It was flips, kicks, and rail-slides at the Strathmore Skate Park yesterday; the Skatemore Girls Club put on a big event as the skating season starts to wrap up. Skatemore Girls organizer Becca McDonald says the night, and the club as a whole, is all about building a positive community.

"We're doing a community gathering to build community here at the skate park. The Town of Strathmore wants to put some love into this space and so we're helping them do that. It's an all-inclusive club; it's not just for girls. And so we come here every Thursday and this is kind of like our little project," McDonald said.

The atmosphere was buzzing; with dozens of skaters showing off their moves, live music, plenty of artists, and a free spray painting mural workshop with experienced Calgary artist Matias Martinez, there was no shortage of excitement at the park. There was even a competition with prizes, with things like new skateboards, stickers, hoodies and more up for grabs!

Skatemore Girls is all about community, and the mural workshop may be the most symbolic of that. McDonald explained the mural will be a group effort they can proudly display wherever they go.

"The kids are going to spray paint it and then we'll take it off of the tent. And we'll be able to have a moving mural, so we can put it wherever we want."

Even though the season is coming to an end soon, McDonald hopes to be able to do some events in the winter as well. As for what the future holds for the club, McDonald hopes to improve the skatepark and continue building the community.

"In the years to come, we're going to try to apply for more grants from different places to be able to fix up the skate park a bit more, like the concrete and maybe putting turf in the middle is something we talked about."

A big part of skate culture is the art, and McDonald said you can check out all the different artists that come to the club on their Instagram.
