The Town of Strathmore will be sending two letters to government officials regarding COVID-19. The first letter will be sent to Dr. Deena Hinshaw and the second to Premier Jason Kenney and Health Minister Tyler Shandro.

The letter to the Chief Medical Officer of Health will be for Strathmore to be included in the Calgary area for enhanced health measures regarding COVID-19. The letter to the premier is regarding support for a province-wide mask mandate.

Chief Administrative Officer Doug Lagore noted that there is confusion in the public about the Calgary zone and the communities that fall under it. For example, High River is included, but Strathmore, which is closer in distance, is not.

The letter is aimed at bringing clarity to the situation.

Councillor Lorraine Bauer said, “I very much support going in that direction.” She explained that even within the AHS the message needs to be that Strathmore is either in the area or not. “Our numbers from what I understand are very close to High River.”

Having Strathmore within the Calgary zone, would put the responsibility to issuing masking mandates and other related health orders on the province, and not on the local municipality.
