Thursday ay 5th at noon the Wheatland Crisis Society (WCS) will host a march in Kinsman Park to support Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and Two-Spirit individuals.

The society has partnered with Trellis and the Town of Strathmore to bring awareness to this issue This will be the first MMIWG2S+ march in Strathmore and organizers are asking participants to wear red in order to bring awareness and support to the Canada-wide crisis.

Natasha Fyfe, the Business Development / Communications Specialist at (WCS) explains why this event is important for Strathmore.

“The hope of having this walk in the community on Thursday is to bring more visibility as 11.4 per cent of missing women are Indigenous in Canada. When only four per cent make up the population. So those numbers are staggering. This is just to bring visibility to the day and honor that.”

May 5th has recently been named the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People. It's also known as Red Dress Day for the dresses that are often hung around cities and towns which aim to bring attention to this disturbing issue.

With the number of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls rising due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this walk is now more important than ever on May 5th join the WCS and Kinsmen Park something red and help support a cause that has an urgent need of support and awareness.
