What started out as a vehicle on fire near the community of Gleichen turned into a small grass fire on Monday.

On April 25, at approximately 10 a.m. firefighters from Wheatland County were called to the scene of a vehicle fire near Range Road 222 and Highway 1 about 3 km from the junction with Highway 901.

Thomas Jukes, Wheatland County, Deputy Regional Fire Chief explained that crews responded to a single vehicle that caught fire.

The incident was not the result of an accident, but the vehicle caught fire during transport.

The initial fire also sparked a small grass fire in the south ditch.

“The highway wasn’t closed to traffic, but one lane was closed just so emergency responders could work safely on scene when extinguishing the vehicle fire and the grass fire. Once they had the fire under control and vehicles removed the lanes were reopened,” he said.

The fire was resolved and crews left the scene at about 11:30 a.m. on the same day.
