After months of waiting, the Strathmore Wheatland Kings finally were able to hit the ice in front of a crowd once again.

It was one game at home and one on the road for the team this weekend starting off in Cochrane.

“Well, we split it up over the weekend. We lost to Cochrane 3-2 on Saturday night. Our goaltender was absolutely fantastic and then Sunday we went in 5-0 over Three Hills. There again we played pretty well, so we're 1-1 in the season and we are pretty happy. Cochrane is probably one of the top in the league, so to stay with them 3-2 we were pretty happy about that.” explained Lee Smith, General Manager of the Wheatland Kings.

Smith continued to say that the pandemic has really affected how hockey is played, and all of the players were chomping at the bit to get those skates on again.

“The guys were really anxious to get going and really happy about being back on the ice.”

The team is also doing their best to keep the boys playing hockey throughout the season by abiding by the government’s COVID-19 restrictions.

“Right now we're going to be using the REP (Restrictions Exemption Program) that's been set up by the provincial government. Players either need to be vaccinated or they need to do a rapid test within 72 hours of game time, or they can get a medical exemption if they qualify for that.”

The same goes for the staff and the fans of the Wheatland Kings. Proof of vaccination or a negative test will be asked as hockey fans enter the arena.

Ticket sales are also online before the game for $7.50, or for $10 at the door.
