The Wheatland Kings nearly blanked the Lomond Lakers in their first game at home on September 7. The Lakers are a new Heritage Junior Hockey League team this season.

The exhibition game was the first one of the season where Kings hockey fans got to see the new team. It was played on the blue ice at the Strathmore Family Centre, with Kings fans filling the bleachers and the lounge overhead. Play was tied in the first period, before the Kings began pulling away in the second period with the score at 4-1 Kings. 

The Kings defeated the Lakers with a final score of 9-1 Kings. 

The next Wheatland Kings game is an exhibition game on September 8 at High River against the Flyers, before the first game of the regular season against the Okotoks Bisons on September 21 and the team's home opener in Strathmore on September 22 at 8 p.m.
