The South Central Alberta Hockey League Wheatland Warriors played the Medicine Hat Hounds during their October 5 home game. The Warriors finished the game with a victory of 6-3.

“I thought we played pretty good, certainly the effort was there. We need to tighten up a few things. Definitely worked hard, definitely put some pressure on the other team and made them make some mistakes,” explained Brett Thurston, Head Coach for the Wheatland Warriors.

The Hounds lead the first period with two goals in the first five minutes. However, the Warriors fought back and managed to score four goals before the end of the first period. Kolten Kuryk scored the first goal from Tyler Fairbairn and from Noah VanSteenis. Connor Radke scored at the halfway point of the period from Nathan Maloney. The teams last two goals of the first period were powerplay goals, the first being an unassisted goal by Nathan Maloney, and the second by Tyler Fairbairn from Nathan Alberda and Brett Schrock.

The Warriors managed to score one more powerplay goal at the halfway point of the third period Jace Coole from Luc Trevors and from Nathan Maloney. Medicine Had earned one more goal in the last two minutes of the period.

Luc Trevors earned the last goal for the Warriors in the third period from Connor Radke, giving the win to the Wheatland Warriors 6-3.

According to Thurston, the team received the same results in their rematch against Medicine Hat, “We won that game 7-3. I felt we played better than Saturday, we had about 54 shots on net. We certainly came out, played a little more structured, did everything we needed to. We played hard.”

The Warriors will be playing the Foothill Bisons on October 12 in Nanton. The teams will be playing at home the next day on October 13 against the Okotoks Oilers at 4:15 p.m. at the Strathmore Family Centre.
