Trellis Commons is bringing another Youth Corner event to get youth involved with community members and learn about what goes on in our community.

On December 8 from 4:00-6:00 PM, Youth Corner will feature Strathmore's Fire Chief David Sturgeon and fellow firefighters to speak with youth about who they are and what they do! Trellis's Family and Youth Resource Specialist Nyala Ponce explained Youth Corner is a fun and engaging way to learn.

"They're just going to highlight firefighters: what they do, how to get into it, the training that's required. They're going to go over some fire safety tips and just more of a casual conversation, and Q&A for youth, we'll have pizza, snacks," Ponce said.

While this Youth Corner is about firefighters, Ponce said in general it's about engaging youth with the community around them.

"(It's about) bringing youth together to talk more about the local community. I think it was September, October we had an RCMP officer come in from Strathmore RCMP. It gives the youth a chance to ask questions, just so they know a face, they know the people in the area. It's just building more community connection for youth."

Some people may remember this event as "Teen Talk," but they rebranded to Youth Corner because Ponce said they didn't want to limit it to just 13 years and older. They have a lot of events for other age groups, like emotional learning eventsfor 7-10-year-olds.

Events aren't limited to specific ages, as Ponce explained it's more geared towards cognitive abilities, so it's not like a 12-year-old would be excluded from an event geared for teenagers, like this firefighter talk. However, there are exceptions. For example, if the Centre for Sexuality was to come in, Ponce said that would be barred to only 13 and up.

We can expect Youth Corner to bring in more community members as we head into the new year, as Ponce said they're looking at bringing in an EMS first responder, a doctor, and potentially even the Mayor.

Outside of Youth Corner, Trellis does other events throughout the year, to keep up with what they're doing you can check out their Facebook page, and read the newsletter that gets circulated through other organizations like the Town of Strathmore, also email StrathmoreFRN@growwithtrellis.ca.
