Motorists heading from Carseland to Strathmore at night along Highway 901 must make a turn onto Highway 817. On January 8, Wheatland County council had a discussion about installing lighting at the intersection to improve visibility for drivers.
Council decided to send a letter to the Minister of Transportation about installation of lighting at the intersection for the safety of residents.
Liz McConnell constituency assistant to MLA Derek Fildebrandt from the Strathmore-Brooks Constituency explained to council that, “we have quite a few constituents coming in and asking for a street light there.”
“The biggest concern is that it is well lit,” said McConnell.
Alan Parkin, Chief Administrative Officer for Wheatland County, said that he was unaware of the exact cost for installation of the street lights.
“I totally agree. It’s an intersection that could use lighting,” he said.
Parkin also said that the road may be reconfigured by the province in the future to allow a more gentle curve.
It was noted during the discussion that there have been fatal motor vehicle incidents near the intersection.
In addition, Parkin said that staff may put together a budget and investigate the cost of a street light for the area.
