Members of Strathmore’s Citizens On Patrol are your neighbours, family and friends. The group are an extra set of eyes and ears for local law enforcement, and help keep Strathmore a little bit safer.
On a regular night, the members begin with a check in with Strathmore RCMP, then they head out for a drive around the community.
“We patrol in pairs,” explained Crystal Johansen. The group likes for members to patrol at minimum of once a month.
“We usually patrol from 10 p.m. to 3 or 4am in the morning, just driving the streets of Strathmore and maybe hanging out more around the bars when they are closing,” she said. The volunteers look for anything that seems suspicious and if they see something, they call the tip in to the authorities.
“We don’t get out of our vehicles, we just call in what we see,” she said.
“I feel like I am contributing to the town,” said Johansen. Strathmore has an active social media community..
“You go out with a partner and you visit. You can go to Timmies and grab a coffee in the middle of the night and its kind of interesting,” she said.
“Many nights nothing happens at all, the night goes by and you don’t make one phone call, but at least you’re out there and even if it’s a quiet night I guess that’s a good night for the town,” Johansen said.
Individuals who wish to join can email the group at [email protected]. To join they are required to go through a criminal record check performed by the RCMP, and must fill out a form that lists basic personal information.
