Even the slightest bit of care can change someone’s life. This month you can help support people in crisis in the Strathmore region by becoming an advocate for Strathmore Regional Victim Services.

“We provide police-based victim services for our victims of crime and traumatic events."

"We serve four police detachments: The Strathmore RCMP. The Chestermere RCMP, the Langdon RCMP and the Gleichen RCMP,” said Dale Morgan, Program Manager for Strathmore Regional Victim Services.

He explained that Strathmore Regional Victim Services is a nonprofit organization, which is run by a board of directors. There are full-time employees and volunteers.

He said their biggest demand right now is for advocates to deploy to provide crisis interventions for victims of crime and traumatic events.

During the day the program employs its office staff, but they are in need of volunteers for after hours on weekends, some evenings, and holidays.

“We have a huge demand right now for advocates. Not that we have a huge volume of calls, but it's still having the advocates available for calls if needed,” said Morgan.

If a person isn't physically capable of being on call in the evenings or weekends, but still would like to volunteer or think they might be able to, there is a possibility to volunteer as a member of the board of directors as well.

Morgan says, “A lot of our advocates feel that the biggest advantage is just the personal satisfaction of helping people in crisis in a time of need.”

He explained that volunteers are asked to commit to about 60 hours of time a month.

There are a few qualifications to meet for those individuals wishing to take part, for example getting a Criminal Record Check, and enhanced security clearance through the RCMP.

During that process, applicants take part in online training and later may become secondary advocates who are partnered with more senior primary advocates.

If you’re interested in volunteering with Strathmore Regional Victim Services, you can contact Morgan by phone at 403-934-6552, email info@strathmoreregionalvictimservices.com.

Applicants from Wheatland County are encouraged to join as well.
