The cattle markets have been volatile over the past few weeks due to the ongoing trade wars involving China.

That from Brian Perillat, senior market analyst with Canfax.

"Futures have been coming off pretty hard," he said. "Just looking at the marketplace and seasonality. The spring highs for the fed cattle market is probably behind us now, so seeing some pressure there and the board and futures adjusting to things that way...There was some positive news with African swine fever and Canadian trade data, but the reality is we're going to have a lot of cattle coming forward through the summer and fall."

Perillat says the 75 cent dollar has been supportive to the cattle markets in western Canada.

He adds prices have started to move to a bit of a discount to a year ago.
