Despite school being over, the Holy Cross Collegiate (HCC) world drumming ensemble decided to put in a bit of extra school work this year to perform for the community on Canada Day.

Music teacher Sarah Haughey explained the ensemble will bring several taiko pieces to Kinsmen Park. Taiko is a Japanese style of drumming known for its high energy and power.

"Taiko is especially cool in that it's very visual and the visuals make the music. The visuals change and it's a very athletic demonstration. They've worked really hard on getting their visuals and their big circular movements and warrior-type poses and freezes to be very together." she said.

"I hope everyone can feel the energy when they perform."

Once school is out the majority of students often go straight to enjoying their summer break, but Haughey said the students in the ensemble were really excited to perform two new pieces for the community. It's also a great way to wrap up the school year.

"A lot of them are in grade 12, so it's kind of their final performance together to showcase all their efforts this year."

The HCC world drumming ensemble is just one of many local performers that will be in Kinsmen Park, you can find more Canada Day details here.
