It’s summer camp time! And kids attending some of the summer camps hosted by the town at the Strathmore Motor Products Sports Centre had the chance to visit with some of the town’s first responders from The Strathmore Fire Department.

Sports Centre programmer Marcie Brinton explains, “We're really lucky to have them as part of our regular programming for camps this year. They're actually visiting each week to do a segment with the kids, they share different fire safety topics. They have different demos and the kids get to see their tools in action.”

“They've been on tours of the trucks and rides already so that's always fun and exciting. When the lights are flashing,” she said.

When asked why it’s important for local kids to see and hear from members of the fire department, Brinton says “I think it's important. They're first responders, and I think it's good for kids in our community to get to know our first responders and get to know what they do on a day-to-day basis, so it's good for them to be able to see what they do when they get their calls to help out the community."

During the day kids were able to have a tour of the fire truck and a demonstration of their E-Draulic vehicle extrication tools and spraying water, and other games with the local firefighters.

The plan is for the firefighters to visit each week, so the kids can learn something new about fire safety each week, that they can take home and use in a real-world situation.
