Wheatland County has repeatedly spoken about getting heavily involved in the hydrogen energy market, and a recent Government of Alberta announcement could be a big boost to advancing those plans.

The Alberta Government said they are providing $45 million to fund new hydrogen technologies. Hydrogen is expected to be a $2.5-$11 trillion industry worldwide by 2050, so the province and Wheatland County are looking to invest early to take advantage of a growing market early.

The funding will go to two hydrogen funding competitions, being the Emissions Reduction Alberta competition and the Alberta Innovates Competition. These two parallel competitions are open to a wide range of applicants, such as technology developers, research and development organizations, municipalities like Wheatland County, and more.

“Alberta is known for its entrepreneurial spirit and, as we are already a leader in this field, this competition will explore and advance clean hydrogen technologies while generating fresh, exciting new projects and ideas," said Minister of Environment and Protected Areas Rebecca Schulz.

The government hopes this funding will "drive cutting-edge and first-of-their-kind hydrogen technologies" by exploring innovation rather than what is already available.

Applications for both funding streams are now open and will close on September 22 for the Emissions Reduction Alberta competition and September 26 for the Alberta Innovates Competition.
