Skatemore Girls are hosting a parade and skate park party on June 17. Skatemore Girls was founded as a resource for youth in the community, aiming to foster a sense of community and home for people who want to skateboard.

It is also an inclusive skateboarding community promoting accessibility and kindness at the Strathmore Skatepark especially holding space for girls and people who identify as part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

Founder of Skatemore Girls Becca McDonald says that pride month is especially important for the community and for the group that skates with Skatemore Girls.

"Participating in pride events promotes inclusivity. When we get together for things like this, we can empower people, struggling to fit in, to express themselves. A crowd of allies and people who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+ reminds us that there is space for the queer community to live comfortably in Strathmore."

McDonald expresses that the goal of putting on this event is to have fun but more than that is to celebrate a beautiful, diverse community in a loud and proud way.

"To show anybody out there who aren't sure whether or not they can be themselves here in this small town, southern Alberta, that indeed there is space and life in the queer community in Strathmore."

McDonald also wants to shed light on the fact that June isn't just pride month as it is also Indigenous History Month, and she is looking forward to celebrating and bringing life to that as well.

McDonald's wants everyone who comes out to be excited to make new friends, "My hope is that there is safe space in Strathmore to be a queer and a diverse person."

On June 17th at 2 pm, Skatemore Girls will be meeting at the south end of Thomas Drive. Then they will parade down the canal pathway and head over to the skatepark around 3 pm.

"Come skateboard or just enjoy the space with us," added Mcdonald sharing that there will also be music, crafts, and a BBQ for folks who'd like to bring their own picnic.
