In May of this year, Becca McDonald started the Skatemore Skateboard club for young girls in our community and has had a great turnout each Thursday afternoon.

McDonald has been thrilled to see the turnout grow each week, "I have 20 waivers signed, then there are the parents that are coming out and they're riding and their siblings that come out to play."

Seeing the younger girls get out and try something new and thrive has definitely piqued the interest of some parents and adults as well who are looking for a safe space to give it a try.

On Wednesday evenings from 8-10, McDonald will be starting ladies' night, "There's interest from all genders and all ages to come out. I think that people are really enjoying the vibe that we're creating. It's a safe space for everybody to push themselves on their boards and just to express themselves."

McDonald is happy to see so many skaters return each week to continue to grow their skills, and some bring their friends and new skaters along as well. There has been support from outside of their group from people in the area like CJ in there from Cousins Skateboarding Company from Siksika Nation.

The goal has always been to make every skater feel comfortable when they are coming out for the first time or even if they further along in their experience explained McDonald,  that is one of the most important things she hopes to offer new skaters of any age on Wednesday evenings.

"It'll look a lot like Thursday night. Just working on tricks and hanging out showing each other what we've been working on and talking about other things that we want to do for the community."

McDonald is hoping to encourage parents to come out and try skateboarding as well, feeling that we are never too old to come out and play. This is a group that she has created for the community and is open to having others join her as she works towards making this club and community of skaters open to those who want to have a positive and fun experience.

"I am hoping that there will be some amazing women that come out and are interested in helping to organize and run Skatemore Girls so that this community can live on for a long time."
